Of all the creatures of the world, birds share our perceptual space the most. They sing and call at frequencies most of us can hear and they display colors and behaviors that we can easily see and enjoy. We are able to identify with birds and share in their lives to a greater extent than we can with most other creatures on our planet.
There are about 9,300 species of birds in the world ranging from the tiny hummingbird, weighing little more than a dime, to the imposing ostrich, weighing over 300 pounds.
Bird houses and feeders are simple ways to attract many of these species to your backyard. I can't imagine a yard without birds. It is a win-win proposition. You get to enjoy watching the birds and they get a reliable and constant source of food.
Food is the number one attraction for birds because most of their everyday life is finding food to stoke their high metabolism.
Bird houses and feeders can be effective in large or small yards amid any neighborhood. If you provide food or housing they will like.
Bird watching or birding as it is commonly called is practiced by more than 60 million North Americans, making it the single largest hobby within North America. America contains birds representing more than 900 of the species that are permanent or summer residents that visit regularly or stay occasionally to this continent.
These species can be found in a wide variety of habitats. Many birdwatchers practice their hobby right in their own backyards. They learn to recognize the different species by sight or their call. Perhapsthey even photograph the birds they see.
Bird watching holds something for every of interest and the amateur watcher stands as much of a chance as the professional of making a discovery sighting that will give that everlasting memory.
